# Dakkak Stuns Shaw as Qatar World Cup Fills Last-64 Field

*Syria's Wisam Dakkak ended Jayson Shaw's week in Doha and Thorsten Hohmann joined a champions' exodus as double-elimination play wrapped Monday night.*

The $450,000 Qatar World Cup 10-Ball finally has its field. Monday's double-elimination finale at the Ezdan Palace Hotel filled the last 32 spots in the last 64 — and claimed three of the sport's most decorated names in the process.

## Dakkak ends Shaw's week

Syrian qualifier Wisam Dakkak produced the result of the night, beating Jayson Shaw 9-7 in a losers' qualification decider to send the Scot home. Shaw had already been pushed to the brink in the afternoon, [beaten 9-7 on the winners' side by Saudi Arabia's Mohammed Baabad](/alnar-topples-feijen-as-32-reach-last-64-at-qatar-world-cup), and Dakkak — who survived his own sudden-death match 9-6 over Ibrahim Al Qaed — finished the job in the evening session.

Shaw's exit was one of two late upsets. Spain's Juan Carlos Exposito routed Aleksa Pecelj 9-2, just days after the Serb qualified for Team Europe's Mosconi Cup squad.

## A brutal day for champions

Two-time world champion Thorsten Hohmann is also out, beaten 9-6 by Taiwan's Hsu Jui An. Max Lechner fell 9-8 in a hill-hill decider to Poland's Dominik Regieli, Sanjin Pehlivanovic fell 9-5 to Filipino qualifier Rocky Tullao, and Raymund Faraon — the man who [ended Albin Ouschan's tournament](/ouschan-out-as-filler-szewczyk-fall-at-qatar-world-cup-10-ball) — was beaten 9-6 by Jefrey Roda.

The afternoon's losers' round had already claimed German legend Ralf Souquet, beaten 9-5 by Egypt's Abdelrahman Salama Nasr, alongside Poland's Radoslaw Babica and Vietnam's Nguyen Phuc Long.

## The survivors

The seeded players who took the long road through did it emphatically. Joshua Filler dropped just three racks across two elimination matches — 9-1 over Mohammed Albalushi, then 9-2 over Jan Van Lierop. Carlo Biado won an all-Filipino decider 9-6 over Mark Estiola, Niels Feijen raced past Jordan's Zein Eddin 9-1, Alex Pagulayan beat the Emirates' Abdulla Juma 9-1, and Wojciech Szewczyk ended Mi Le's run 9-5.

David Alcaide (9-7 over Lazar Kostic), Naoyuki Oi (9-5), Wiktor Zielinski (9-4), Bernie Regalario (9-3) and Roda also progressed, while Jundel Mazon whitewashed India's Shahbaaz Adil Khan 9-0. Kuwait's Bader Alawadhi gave the home crowd a regional winner, beating Hubert Lopotko 9-6.

## The 64-man field

The last 64 has a distinctly Philippine and Polish flavor: 13 Filipinos and 10 Poles made the cut — more than a third of the knockout field. They join defending champion Jonas Magpantay, runner-up Szymon Kural and the rest of the 32 winners'-side qualifiers.

Tuesday's standout ties (all races to 11): Magpantay opens his defense against Hohmann's conqueror Hsu Jui An, Filler meets Iraq's Ameer Ali, Francisco Sanchez Ruiz faces Filipino Marlon Caneda, Mateusz Sniegocki draws Biado, Robbie Capito meets Alcaide, and Fedor Gorst plays Marco Teutscher. Dakkak's reward for beating Shaw is Sweden's Walter Laikre.

Play starts at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Doha time; the bracket, results and schedule are tracked on the [tournament hub](https://ncuemedia.com/qatar-world-cup-10-ball). The champion is crowned Thursday in a race to 13 worth $100,000.
