# Husband-and-Wife Styers Win National Pairs at Grand Finals

*Tyler Styer and Margaret Fefilova-Styer beat Shane Van Boening and Chris Melling 6-2 in Friday's National Pairs final at Harrah's Cherokee — while the Mixed Pairs and 10-Ball Teams finals ran into the weekend.*

The biggest week in American league pool crowned a husband and wife on Friday night. Tyler Styer and Margaret Fefilova-Styer beat Shane Van Boening and Chris Melling 6-2 in the National Pairs final at the Ultimate Pool USA Grand Finals in Harrah's Cherokee, North Carolina — a second title of the week for Fefilova-Styer, and a second final defeat in as many nights for Van Boening.

Two more finals spilled into the weekend. The Mixed Pairs title match was still unplayed late Friday and moves to Saturday, and the 10-Ball Teams final was still in progress past midnight Eastern.

## National Pairs: Styer & Fefilova-Styer 6-2

The champions came through the day's tightest match in the quarter-finals, edging Rab McCullough and Mark McDonald 4-3, then beat Rodney Morris and Shane Thompson 6-4 in the semis before running away with the final.

Van Boening and Melling had looked the pair to beat, winning three consecutive matches 6-3 — over Paul and Ian Stecher, over Hayden Ernst and Landon Hollingsworth in the quarters, and over Tom Cousins and Declan Brennan in the semis — before the Styers broke the pattern in the title match, per the official DigitalPool bracket.

The pairs crown is Fefilova-Styer's second trophy of the week after Monday's National Women's Shootout. For Van Boening it follows Thursday's 10-Ball Showdown final loss to Joven Bustamante.

## Mixed Pairs: final moves to Saturday

Ashley Benoit and Chris Melling will face Avah Weems and Oscar Dominguez for the Mixed Pairs title after the final was pushed to Saturday.

Benoit and Melling won their semi-final 6-1 over Styer and Fefilova-Styer — the new National Pairs champions, sent straight back to the table after lifting the trophy, managed a single rack. It gives Melling an immediate second shot at a pairs title. Weems and Dominguez took the other semi 6-5 over Van Boening and Sofia Mast — Van Boening's third finals-stage defeat of the week, and a second Grand Finals final for Dominguez, Wednesday's National Shootout champion.

## 10-Ball Teams: final runs past midnight

The 10-Ball Teams final — In The Stroke Of Time against Armstrong All-Stars — began late Friday night and was still in progress past midnight ET, with Armstrong All-Stars leading 23-7 at the latest check of the DigitalPool bracket.

Armstrong produced the comeback of the week in the semifinals, trailing Syndicate 9-3 before storming back to win 16-15. In The Stroke Of Time had the easier path, beating Marcia's Misfits 24-9.

## 8-Ball Teams: the $112,000 Saturday

Friday's quarter-finals set the last four in the richest event in league pool: Amigos routed Drunken Masters 44-13, How You Like Me Now beat Cue The Chaos 28-2, Big Time Rockets saw off Speed Killz 29-16, and Rack Of Ages beat Lucky Break Birmingham 24-12.

Saturday's semifinals go at 10 a.m. ET (Amigos vs. How You Like Me Now) and 2 p.m. ET (Big Time Rockets vs. Rack Of Ages), with the final at 8 p.m. ET and $112,000 to the champion — the biggest top prize in league pool history.

## Around the hall

All five National Singles divisions settled their Stage 2 champions on Friday: Darren Musser took Class A over Matthew Shoemaker on the deciding shootout after a 2-2 draw, Omkar Narain beat Morgan Stout 3-2 in Class B, Jose De la Vega beat Romain Sankar 4-1 in Class C, Charcoal Perez beat Josh Williamson 2-0 in Class D, and Michael Bramlett took the Semi-Pro title 3-1 over Kevin Wampner.

The National Open and National Women's Open continued bracket play through Friday, both bound for Sunday, and the National Junior Open begins on Saturday.
