# Shane Van Boening: Career, Titles and Latest Results

Shane Van Boening — "The South Dakota Kid" — has been American pool's standard-bearer
for nearly two decades: a world champion in both nine-ball and eight-ball, a five-time
US Open winner, and the most-capped player in Mosconi Cup history. He is also the
owner of the most feared break in the modern game.

## Career at a glance

famously blocking out arena noise better than anyone in the game

Team honours: three Mosconi Cup wins with Team USA (2009, 2018, 2019), including
pocketing the winning ball in 2009. A record **19 consecutive Mosconi Cup appearances**
through 2025 — more than any player in the event's history.

## The break, the wait, and the record

Van Boening grew up in a pool-playing family in South Dakota, winning national amateur
titles before turning pro in the mid-2000s. The wait for a world title lasted almost
two decades: he lost World 9-Ball finals in 2017 and 2018 before finally beating
Austria's Albin Ouschan — the man who had denied him in 2018 — for the 2022 crown.
A year later he added the World 8-Ball title.

His US Open record is equally heavyweight: five titles including three consecutive
wins in 2012–2014, and a 2016 victory that tied boyhood idol Earl Strickland's record.
His power break — practiced daily and feared tour-wide — became one of the sport's
signature weapons.

Diagnosed with severe hearing loss as a child, he plays with hearing aids. In loud
arenas it doubles as an advantage: nobody in the game hears less of the crowd.
