DOHA, Qatar — The Qatar World Cup 10-Ball cut its field to 16 on Tuesday evening at the Ezdan Palace Hotel, and the biggest scalp belonged to Carlo Biado, who took down No. 3 seed Francisco Sanchez Ruiz 11-6 to headline a banner night for Filipino pool.

Biado removes the favorite

Sanchez Ruiz arrived unbeaten through the winners' side of the draw, but the former world champion Biado controlled the tie throughout to win 11-6 and set up a last-16 meeting with Poland's Konrad Juszczyszyn, who edged compatriot Dominik Jastrzab 11-10 in an all-Polish decider.

It was the pick of the evening's results: the No. 3 seed out, and the former world champion hitting form at exactly the right time.

The Filipino wave

Biado is one of four Filipinos through to the last 16 — a quarter of the remaining field. Jerico Bonus produced another upset, beating Wiktor Zielinski 11-9 a day after the Pole had removed No. 8 seed Kledio Kaci. Miguel Salvilla survived a hill-hill battle with England's Elliott Sanderson 11-10, and Rocky Tullao edged Austria's Mario He by the same scoreline — Tullao's second straight victory over a major name after beating Eklent Kaci.

Bonus and Salvilla meet each other on Wednesday, meaning the Philippines is guaranteed at least one quarterfinalist.

Vietnam's Duong Quoc Hoang also impressed, eliminating Robbie Capito 11-6 a day after the Hong Kong-born Capito had taken out David Alcaide.

Champions roll on

Fedor Gorst produced the most ruthless display of the round, thrashing Mahmoud Charif 11-1 in the session's quickest match. Defending champion Jonas Magpantay ended Alex Pagulayan's run 11-7, world No. 1 Wojciech Szewczyk routed 2025 runner-up Szymon Kural 11-4, and Joshua Filler's recovery from a first-round defeat continued with an 11-8 win over Oliver Szolnoki.

Elsewhere, John Morra beat Walter Laikre 11-10, Tobias Bongers saw off Karl Gnadeberg 11-7, Hsieh Chia Chen defeated Dimitrios Loukatos 11-7, Jundel Mazon beat Juan Carlos Exposito 11-8, 2024 champion Daniel Maciol ended Jefrey Roda's run 11-7, and Albert James Manas finally halted Mustafa Alnar's giant-killing week 11-5.

Last 16 — Wednesday

The last 16 begins Wednesday at 11 a.m. Doha time and serves up a heavyweight tie immediately: Magpantay meets Szewczyk, while Biado faces Juszczyszyn, Filler plays Bongers and Gorst takes on Hsieh Chia Chen. Mazon against Manas pits two of the week's surprise packages against each other.
