Gorst survives hill-hill scare as Biado, Filler march into last 32
The world No. 4 needed all 21 racks to shake off Marco Teutscher, while David Alcaide, Niels Feijen and Naoyuki Oi led a string of seeded exits as single elimination began at the Ezdan Palace Hotel.
DOHA, Qatar — The Qatar World Cup 10-Ball went single elimination on Tuesday, and by the end of two sessions at the Ezdan Palace Hotel the last-64 field had been halved, with Fedor Gorst's 11-10 hill-hill escape against Marco Teutscher topping a day of tight finishes and seeded exits.
The contenders move on
Gorst, the world No. 4, needed every one of the 21 racks to put away Teutscher in the day's most dramatic match. Defending champion Jonas Magpantay had no such trouble, racing through Hsu Jui An 11-4, and No. 3 seed Francisco Sanchez Ruiz was just as efficient in an 11-3 win over Marlon Caneda.
Joshua Filler, dropped to the losers' side on day one, continued his recovery with an 11-8 defeat of Iraq's Ameer Ali in the featured tie of the morning session. Carlo Biado beat Mateusz Sniegocki 11-6, Wojciech Szewczyk routed Juri Pisklov 11-3 and 2025 runner-up Szymon Kural got past Jerson Cumayas 11-9.
Alex Pagulayan beat Qatar's Ali Alobaidli 11-8 and Albert James Manas routed Bashar Hussain 11-3, ending the host nation's challenge in the round.
A long list of exits
The round was less kind to a string of names. Robbie Capito eliminated Spain's David Alcaide 11-7, Mahmoud Charif took out Japan's Naoyuki Oi 11-9 and Poland's Wiktor Zielinski removed No. 8 seed Kledio Kaci 11-7.
Niels Feijen, Team Europe's Mosconi Cup captain, fell 5-11 to Hungary's Oliver Szolnoki, while Alexander Kazakis went 7-11 to Konrad Juszczyszyn. Mustafa Alnar's remarkable week rolled on — having already sent Filler and Feijen to the losers' bracket, he edged No. 17 seed Bernie Regalario 11-10.
Wisam Dakkak, the Syrian who knocked out Jayson Shaw on Monday night, could not repeat the trick: Estonia's Walter Laikre beat him 11-9. Rocky Tullao's 11-6 win over two-time world 10-ball champion Eklent Kaci and Tobias Bongers' 11-9 defeat of Ruslan Chinakhov rounded out the notable casualties. Miguel Salvilla won the day's all-Filipino tie, edging Aivhan Maluto 11-9.
Hill-hill day in Doha
Four of the 32 matches went the full distance. Alongside Gorst–Teutscher and Alnar–Regalario, Jerico Bonus outlasted Sambor Stachowiak 11-10 and Greece's Dimitrios Loukatos edged Ruben Cuna by the same score.
Last 32 — same evening
There is no rest for the survivors: the last 32 plays Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. Doha time, and the draw has already produced heavy ties. Sanchez Ruiz meets Biado, Magpantay faces Pagulayan, Filler takes on Szolnoki and Szewczyk plays Kural, while Alnar's giant-killing run continues against Manas.
