Home Hero Perfect on Opening Day
David Alcaide gave the local crowd exactly what it came for as the Revora Spanish Open the final Predator Euro Tour stop of the 2026 season began Thursday at the Gandia Palace Hotel on Spain's Mediterranean coast.
The veteran Spaniard needed barely an hour to dismiss compatriot David Prieto 9-0 in the morning session on Table 19, then returned to the feature table in the afternoon and beat Poland's Dominik Regieli 9-4. Alcaide resumes Friday morning against fellow Spaniard Raul Martin Muela in the winners' side second round.
Fellow former world champion Francisco Sanchez Ruiz closed the evening session with a 9-4 win over Slovenia's Maj Badovinac on Table 1. He meets Poland's Radoslaw Babica on Friday.
Poland's Qatar Contingent Arrives in Stages
The draw's biggest names are filtering in straight from Doha. Wojciech Szewczyk, who leads the Euro Tour standings and reached the semifinals at this week's Qatar World Cup 10-Ball, was given a late start and opens his campaign Friday at 2:15 p.m. local time against Germany's Niklas Dohr.
Daniel Maciol, Szewczyk's partner in the Qatar final four, makes his debut Friday evening at 5:45 p.m. against Syria's Delmon Khwaja.
Konrad Juszczyszyn, a quarterfinalist in Qatar, had no such grace period. He played twice Thursday, beating the Czech Republic's Matous Vlk 9-3 before edging Germany's Tobias Bongers 9-8 in a hill-hill decider.
Season Finale With Rankings on the Line
There is no next stop after Gandia, which makes every rack this week a year-end ranking opportunity. The men's event has drawn 165 players from more than 30 countries, spread across 28 tables 20 inside the Gandia Palace Hotel and eight more, including a three-table TV arena, in a purpose-built hall next door.
The men play race-to-9 double elimination down to the last 32, where the format switches to single-elimination races to 11, with alternate break in two-rack visits throughout. The prize fund is 60,700 euros, and WPA world ranking points are on offer for the first time on the Euro Tour.
Szewczyk tops the standings after winning the season opener in Antalya, finishing runner-up in Luxembourg and claiming a second WPA 10-Ball world title in Vietnam but the top ten behind him is tightly packed, and the year-end race remains open.
What's Next
Play resumes Friday at 9:00 a.m. local time, when the women's event also gets underway. The Revora Spanish Women's Open has 52 players from 16 nations, with 15 of the top 20 on tour present including world No. 1 Pia Filler, who defends a 230-point lead atop the rankings. Both finals are scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Sunday, with Tables 1, 2 and 3 streamed live on the Pro Billiard TV YouTube channel.
